Rebel Moon is an upcoming sci-fi fantasy blockbuster made by Zack Snyder that will premiere on Netflix and should be an introduction to a brand new universe.

Netflix wants Rebel Moon to be as big as Star Wars with huge universe made out of many movies, books and other things. Will it really happen? We just have to wait and see but their first production – Army of the Dead, was one of the best performing movies on the streaming giant. Both parties have something to prove. Netflix wants people to see that they can offer cinema-quality entertainment to their subscribers, and Zack wants to show Warner Bros and DC that letting him go was a wrong decision.

Rebel Moon is set to be an epic two-parter with the likelihood of many spin-offs. Initially, Zack Snyder wrote Rebel Moon as a new movie from Star Wars universe, but it his take on this epic sci-fi was too mature for Lucasfilm. He pitched this idea to them back in 2021.

What is Rebel Moon About?

This epic sci-fi fantasy movie follows a story of Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger that is living among the villagers of once a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy. She is tasked with finding the best fighters that will unite with her in a war against the Mother World. She goes on a mission to assemble a band of warriors – outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of different wars that share her will for revenge and redemption. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

Will Rebel Moon Have a Theatrical Release?

Rebel Moon is set to have a limited theatrical run in the weeks before Netflix premiere. As of right know, it is unknown in which countries and in how many theaters will it premiere. Snyder’s previous Netflix production screened for one week in May 2021 in 600 theaters in the United States.

Did Netflix Release a Trailer for Rebel Moon?

The first trailer was presented during Gamescom 2023. During those three and a half minutes it gives potential viewers a good look at this new, vast universe, characters and high-octane action with stunning CGI.

Rebel Moon is an extreme PG-13

PG-13 is a standard for pretty much every blockbuster movie, streaming or those in cinemas. PG-13 was given for the following reasons: a large dose of violence, sexual assault, bloody scenes, profanity, partial nudity, and sexually suggestive content. PG-13 is consistent with the filmmaker’s previous announcements.

Will there be Rebel Moon Director’s Cut?

Yes. Zack Snyder, in earlier interviews, promised that after the premiere of the censored version, a director’s cut with a high age rating of R would appear on Netflix, meaning content not suitable for persons under 17 years of age. Apparently, this is the result of a compromise between Snyder and Netflix, as the platform initially wanted something that could reach a larger audience due to its age category. The extended version is said to have 30 minutes more of scenes.

Was Rebel Moon Always Meant to be a Two-Parter?

The original script was 172 pages long. This is how Deborah Snyder explained why it was cut into two parts:

Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in ‘Zack form. It was 172 pages. (Chairman of Netflix Films, Scott) Stuber was like, ‘On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,’ even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes. “Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for…’ So he said, ‘What if I give you two movies?

When Did Rebel Moon Film?

Filming began in April 2022 and ended on December 2, 2022. Production mainly took place in California.

Which actors are in Rebel Moon?

Sofia Boutella portrays Kora, a young woman tasked with leading a defense force against the might of Regent Balisarius. Most audiences remember Boutella from her standout performance as Gazelle in the action-comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Anthony Hopkins (Two-time Oscar winner) is giving his voice to Jimmy, a JC1435 sentient mechanized robot who once protected a defeated king. Zack Snyder said that this character is a wild card who i s on a journey of self-discovery and compared it to Lancelot, from Arthurian legends.

Djimon Hounsou is set to take on the role of the battle-scarred hero, General Titus. He recognizes that his best days might be behind him. Yet, the determination and drive Kora displays in her mission to transform the destinies of those around her persuades him to step into the fray once more. He aims to act before the Imperium wreaks havoc on yet another vulnerable planet.

Charlie Hunnam is slated to portray Kai, a pilot committed to aiding Kora in her mission to save her newfound homeland. Given the steampunk environment of Rebel Moon, sourcing suitable gear for combat and travel proves challenging, often leaving the characters reliant on scavenged scrap metal from their planet. Alongside these challenges, a once-renowned hero, now past his prime, becomes essential to the mission’s success. It’s up to Kora to do all in her power to persuade him to join her journey.

Other cast members of Rebel Moon include Ed Skrein as Regent Balisarius, a mercenary starship pilot, Ray Fisher & Cleopatra Coleman as Darrian & Devra Bloodaxe, Michiel Huisman Gunnar, a farmer and friend of Devra, Jena Malone as Harmada, a spider warrior, Staz Nair as the blacksmith Tarak, Doona Bae as the cyborg swordmaster Nemesis, newcomer E. Duffy as Millius, and Fra Fee as Regent Balisarius. Also in the cast in undisclosed roles are Stuart Martin, Corey Stoll, Cary Elwes, Alfonso Herrera, Rhian Rees, and Ray Porter.

When Is Rebel Moon Releasing?

Part 1, which is titled A Child of Fire will be a Christmas gift from Netflix to all of us as it will premiere on December 22, 2023. Part 2 is called The Scargiver and will release on April 19, 2024.
